danielle nottingham joins us live from d.c. where the house is set to reconvene in just about an hour. good morning. >>> reporter: vice president joe biden is in on the negotiations. mitch mcconnell asked him to help out after talks stalled. with hours to go it's hard to tell if lawmakers will be able to agree to a watered down deal. lawmakers left the capital sunday night without a deal in place. but leaders from both parties expressed their willingness to continue working. >> there's still significant difference between the two sides but negotiations continue. >> he want everyone to know i'm willing to get it done but i need a dance partner. >> reporter: some progress was made sunday when republicans dropped a proposal to slow social security growth but the main sticking point between democrats and republicans continues to be over the threshold of tax increases. president obama campaigned on raising taxes on income over $250,000. while many congressional republicans have pushed back against any tax increases. president obama is placing the blame for the impasse on the gop. >> they say tha

to go all the way back to stet son beach and use highway 1 south to get back to the freeway. a rock long, long way to go. >>> and a massive sink hole happened on the stony point road south of highway 116. a trainnage pipe under the road caused the pavement to collapse. road crews brought in massive steel plates to cover it while repairs were made. >> we're taking safety precautions to make sure a car doesn't fall through and fall into the hole. >> crews say the road could be closed for three days wheel they patch up that hole. >>> a storm in the sierra dumped a ton of snow. they got 6 to 8 feet of it. skiers, snow boarders and sled riders headed to the high country to enjoy it. but with winds gusting to 70 miles per hour, driving was dangerous, and slowgoing to the resort. >>> on interstate 80 chains required for eastbound traffic from baxter to truckie. there are chain controls westbound. highway 50 to my years and on state route 88, chain controls begin at cook station. >>> today is forecast with sunny skies, should be promising for holiday travelers. yesterday it was a mess at san fra

and there was a mother who lived there with her young son. she told us that she thinks somebody threw something into her home and that's what caused it to set on fire. so arson investigators are on scene. they are trying to sort all of this out but we are on dixon street right by the bart station. this was a one-alarm fire but again it caused significant damage and firefighters say that that family won't be able to return home. nobody was hurt. pg&e crews also on scene securing some lines and we are still waiting to get some more information but as i said arson investigators are on scene. elissa harrington, cbs 5. >>> new this morning, a fire in east oakland is believed to have been started by squatters. the single-alarm fire happened around 1:30 this morning on 64th and international boulevard. officials say homeless people may have been living in the building at the time. no injuries reported. >>> the same building caught fire in august. it took firefighters about half hour to put it out back then. and at the time, it was an appliance store called budget appliances. >>> a man is in critical condition
